Sausage, pickles, add in some heat, right? Bucky Builder saw the Tijuana Mama pickled sausage at the store and had to try it. What did he find? Watch the 1 minute review below!
I love hot food. And I love pickled food. I love sausages, So, trying a Tijuana Mama pickled sausage was a no brainer. At the store I bought a couple, one for me, and one for my granddaughter, thinking they looked an awful lot like the Penrose Firecrackers. I thought that maybe the convenience store staple Firecrackers had been renamed, rebranded, or maybe bought out. Or, perhaps, imitated. [[[shocked sound effect]]]
Whenever I spot the Penrose Firecracker at a store, my mouth instantly fills with saliva. I love pretty much all things pickled, and that tangy heat, OMG! So, when I spotted the Tijuana Mama product from Penrose, I knew, yep, this is going to be for me.
I mean, the Tijuana Mamas looked the same as Firecrackers. the sausage, the packaging, the “entice the eye” artwork. No surprise there as they are both from the ConAgra owned Penrose company.
Okay, moving away from the similarity in looks to the Big Mama and the Firecracker, and peeling open the plastic sheath, the smell is similar, very similar, to a Penrose Firecracker, which, as I mentioned above, is tangy. It has very little heat. Now, I have not had a Big Mama, but that is on my list going forward. Is the Tijuana Mama pickled sausage all that hot?
So, the Tijuana Mama pickled sausage, how hot is it? And 400%, really?
First of all, 400% simply means 4 times hotter. Simple as that. 400% sounds grandiose, astronomical, and is used to make it sound extremely hot. It really isn’t all that hot. When I see 400% hotter than something else, I’m expecting One Chip challenge hot. Yet, like the chip challenge, the “hey, let’s just make it hot regardless of flavor” intent is there as well.
Furthermore, that 400%? Well, it’s not all that hot. The original sample must be fairly mild. Tame, in other words.
Well, in a word, yes. Is it an everyday treat? No. I’d recommend having a box of them at a party, perhaps. While everyone is sloshing back a few brews, I can totally see this being a thing.
Let me expand on the “all the time treat” portion, or the lack thereof: my 12 year old granddaughter is not a heat fiend. She can eat some hot, spicy food, but usually stays in the slow lane. Z prefers little heat, in other words. She did her best to down the Tijuana Mama pickled sausage, so as to not appear weak, but the last 2 inches, nope. After that her tummy hurt. Well, I’m a lot more in the fast lane when it comes to spicy food, but you know what?
Even I experienced some gastric distress a few hours after eating one. Never mind that I ate it on an empty stomach, so of course it caused some havoc. So, while the noshing was not completely unpleasant, the digesting was another story.
For Pete’s Sake (who is this Pete anyway?) don’t make something hot just for the sake of the heat. In my humble opinion, the heat ought to be integral, and mix with, play nicely with, the overall flavor. The Tijuana Mama pickled sausage has heat, sure, yet said heat seems almost a counter to the overall flavor. Add a more vinegar flavor, half as much heat, and I’d buy these hot sticks all the time! As they are, no, once was enough. Maybe I’ll have try a Big Mama, see how those taste. After all, I do love hot pickled sausages! I’m just a little luke warm on the hot Tijuana Mama pickled sausage.
If you want to see a pansy friend squirm, while you scream, “Buck up butter cup, ya candy assed little sissy, it’s not that hot!” while laughing yourself silly, then the Tijuana mama pickled sausages may be just the thing. I mean, seriously, who doesn’t love to do that?
I remember walking with a guy named Ed, eating Habanero chips. Ed puffed with pride what I asked him if he thought the chips were hot. “I’m Mexican, nothing is hot to me!” Poor Ed. He was Mexican, but he couldn’t eat hot. We’re walking along, each with a bag, mine were a little hot, and I turned to comment on it, and poor ed was beat res, eyes watering, and began coughing. I don’t rib Ed too much, he knew he’d been exposed, no point in it. But inside I was busting up.
