I call them Skyraisins

Call them what you will, pests, houseflies, food pukers, I call them skyraisins, just like my dogs do. When one zips past, they are lunging, right freaking now. Flies are nasty, and I am surrounded by dairy and egg farms. We get a lot of them!

Dogs love skyraisins

Dogs, our loyal and ever-hungry companions, have a knack for redefining the mundane aspects of our human lives. Take, for instance, the humble housefly. To us, it’s an annoying pest; to our canine friends, it’s the equivalent of a mid-air snack. Yes, you heard it right, in the world according to dogs, houseflies are not pests, they’re “skycandy” or, as the connoisseurs say, “skyraisins.”

Why “skyraisins,” you ask? Well, let’s paws and reflect. From a dog’s perspective, these buzzing delicacies are like nature’s own version of a catchable treat, zipping around in exciting, unpredictable patterns that stimulate their primal hunting instincts. While we humans swat and curse, our dogs are sitting by, tongues out, waiting for the moment to leap and snap up a tasty morsel from the air.

The sport of skyraisin hunting is a proud tradition in the canine community. Picture this: a sunny afternoon, a gentle breeze, and then the buzz – it’s game on. The living room becomes a grand arena where our furry friends demonstrate their acrobatic prowess, leaping and twisting with the grace of an uncoordinated ballerina. They dart from couch to couch, their eyes locked on the prize, every fiber of their being focused on the ultimate goal: to catch the elusive skyraisin. you can almost hear them skying “I love skyraisins!”

Let’s not forget the training that goes into becoming a skyraisin connoisseur. It takes patience, focus, and a bit of delusional optimism. After all, more often than not, these daring chases end in a nose boop rather than a snack. But do not fret, for dogs are eternal optimists. Each miss is simply a step closer to the next snacktastic opportunity.

One must admire the poetic nature of the chase. Where we see a fly, a dog sees a feast. Where we see annoyance, they see entertainment. It’s a reminder that joy can be found in the simplest of things – even if it means rebranding houseflies as “skyraisins.”

In conclusion, the next time a fly enters your domain and you reach for that swatter, take a moment to appreciate the little creature. Not for its irritating buzz, but for the sheer delight it brings to your dog. Remember, in a world where we struggle to find the silver lining, our dogs have mastered the art of silver lining snack time. So, hats off (and lids up) to our canine friends, the grand gourmands of the insect world. May the skyraisins be ever in your favor.
