Hot damn the rabbit died, or didn’t, or however you want to phrase it, this funny cartoon image illustrates, sometimes it is good news!
The phrase, “good news, the rabbit died,” is an antiquated way of announcing a pregnancy. Using rabbits was an old pregnancy test method that was used in the mid-20th century.
Before the development of modern pregnancy tests, one of the earliest biological pregnancy tests was the so-called “rabbit test.” This was in use from the 1920s to the 1950s. It involved injecting a woman’s urine into a female rabbit and then observing the rabbit’s ovaries a few days later. So, if the woman was pregnant, the hormone (human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG) present in her urine would cause the rabbit’s ovaries to react.
Contrary to the popular phrase, the rabbit would die whether the woman was pregnant or not. The rabbit was dissected to examine its ovaries. Thus, it died no matter. The phrase “the rabbit died” simply became a colloquial way of saying that the test was positive for pregnancy. The rabbit’s death was not a result of the presence of the pregnancy hormone but rather the method of the test itself.
