Why??? Cockroach Clusters Candy

Funny fail product, the Cockroach Clusters Candy Fail. Whomever came up with this idea in the boardroom should be fired. Of course you never know what may be a hit with the kids, so you throw it all against the wall to see what sticks.

Candy manufacturers have certainly tried to come up with new and innovative products to appeal to consumers, but not every idea has been a hit, such as Cockroach Clusters Candy. Here are some notable “gross” or unpopular candy fails from the past:

Exciting Kitchen Items

  1. Garbage Can-dy: While the candy itself wasn’t gross, the concept was off-putting to some. These were little garbage can-shaped containers filled with candy that resembled things you’d find in the trash, like fish bones and old shoes.
  2. Chocolate Skittles: In 2007, Skittles introduced a chocolate mix that included flavors like s’mores, brownie batter, and vanilla. They didn’t last long, as many felt they didn’t match the fruity identity of Skittles.
  3. Heinz Ketchup-flavored Dum Dums: It’s hard to imagine ketchup-flavored lollipops being a hit, and unsurprisingly, they weren’t. They were created as a promotional item and never became a regular offering.
  4. Jones Soda Candy: Jones Soda is known for its unconventional flavors, but when they made them into candy form, some flavors didn’t translate well.
  5. Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans: Inspired by the “Harry Potter” series, this candy featured a mix of delicious and disgusting flavors. While it was meant to be fun and true to the series, eating a vomit or earwax-flavored jelly bean wasn’t appealing to everyone.
  6. Luden’s Chocolate-Covered Cough Drops: Combining candy and medicine can be tricky. Luden’s tried this by offering chocolate-covered cough drops, but it didn’t resonate with consumers.
  7. Bubble Yum’s Soft Drink Line: In the 80s, Bubble Yum tried to introduce soft drink-flavored bubble gums including Dr. Pepper, 7Up, and Hawaiian Punch. They weren’t a lasting hit.
  8. Candy Cigarettes: While these were popular decades ago, modern consumers see them as in poor taste due to the negative health impacts of smoking. Many countries have even banned them due to concerns they promote smoking to children.
  9. Ayu Jelly Candy: In Japan, there was a candy that replicated the taste of Ayu, a sweetfish. The combination of fish flavor and candy texture was jarring for many.
  10. Lobster Candy: Made by Archie McPhee, this hard candy is lobster-flavored. While meant as a novelty, it’s not the first choice for those looking for a sweet treat.
