The Chris Rock vs Will Smith debacle, ah, the wild and unpredictable world of live television! Just when we think we’ve seen it all, along comes a moment that leaves our jaws dropped and our laughter restrained. Remember the slap heard around the world? No, we’re not talking about a new brand of potato chips. We’re talking about that infamous Oscars moment between Will Smith and Chris Rock.
Now, before we dive deep into our slapstick analysis, let’s make it clear: Violence is no laughing matter. But come on! These are comedians, and in the world of comedy, unexpected chaos is… kinda the point?
I’ve been sitting on this one for a while, watching the Youtube and Tiktok videos, mostly of Chris Rock on stage talking about this episode on front of an audience. Funny stuff. On Chris Rick vs Will Smith Chris says “Will is significantly larger than me. He does movies with his shirt off. If I were in a movie playing a part getting a hear transplant, I’d be in a sweater.” Now, I’m not a big Chris Rock fan, however, he does have his moments.
Remember the days of Charlie Chaplin, where characters would fall, slip, trip, and, yes, slap each other for the sake of humor? Maybe Will and Chris were just channeling those bygone times and offering us a modern-day rendition. If that was an improv act, though, maybe they need a tad more practice.
Some said the Oscars had become too predictable. Best dress, best speech, best blunder – we’ve seen it all. But no one saw this coming. Perhaps this was just the universe’s way of spicing up our annual ritual of celebrity admiration.
Both Will and Chris have made their marks in comedy. But nothing says “I’m dedicated to my craft” like physical demonstrations of comedic timing. While most comedians use their words, these two, for a brief moment, decided to use their… palms?
Given the memorable nature of this event, we might want to consider introducing a new Oscars category: Best Unscripted Dramedy Moment. And the nominees for 2022 would include… well, just that one.
Following the incident, Twitter was ablaze with fan-made posters of Will and Chris in imagined slap-themed movie projects. Titles like “Slap Brothers,” “One Slap at a Time,” and “The Slapening” trended for days. Hollywood, are you listening? This could be a box office goldmine.
While that fateful night gave us a shocker, it’s essential to remember the broader context. Remember, comedians have always been at the forefront of pushing boundaries and making us reflect upon society’s quirks and idiosyncrasies.
Also, keep in mind that ALL humor, or nearly all of it, pokes fun at SOMEONE!
And while no one endorses physical altercations as a method of comedic delivery, in a world often too serious for its own good, maybe, just maybe, we needed a reminder of the unpredictability of live events. And who better to give it to us than two of the biggest names in comedy?
Disclaimer: Always remember, kids – keep your hands to yourselves. Unless you’re passing popcorn during an Oscars rerun.
